Issue Position: 10th Amendment and Self-Government

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

The Tenth Amendment is the ultimate declaration of liberty. It enshrines in law that any powers not explicitly delegated to the Federal Government are reserved to the States and People. Until 1913 with the passage of the 17th Amendment, the States themselves had representation in the Federal Government. Senators were the representatives of the States, while Congressmen in the House represented the People. I believe we should repeal the 17th Amendment.

Until then, my role as a Congressman will be to represent the People of Tennessee and the State, as Senators once did. By maintaining close relationships with our State and local governments, they can prepare beforehand to defend against Federal overreach.
